The Voluntary Europeen service, what it is?

1) The European Voluntary Service: what is it ?

As its name indicates it, the SVE allows to leave for Europe as a volunteer.
What is an European volunteer? It is an at least 18 years old person and of at most 30 years, who wishes to work voluntarily within an European association for period varying from 6 months to 12 months. Every project is the object of a contract of activity between the volunteer, a sending organization and a reception organization (sometimes also a coordinating organization). The volunteer can leave in all the countries of the European Union as well as the Norvege, Iceland, Liechtenstein, Turkey, but also Southeast Europe (Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia, Macedonia, Montenegro and Serbia); Eastern Europe and Caucasus (Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Georgia, Moldavia, Russia and Ukraine) and the Mediterranean partner countries (Algeria, Palestinian Authority of the West Bank and Gaza Strip, Egypt, Israel, Jordan, Lebanon, Morocco, Syria and Tunisia).

The projects are very varied. For example, in the Youth Center of Haskovo (city in the South of Bulgaria), we are at present three volunteers (Melchior, who comes from Germany, Egiya who comes from Latvia and me, Adeline, from France) and we are going to work with children from 2 to 7 years old in schools and orphanages to propose them artistic activities. You can also find missions in touch with animals and nature conservation, or still with old persons, or organize sports activities in a center for teenagers, work in a cultural center … The variety of projects allows each to find a suitable match.
The volunteer has no salary (he is not there to replace an employee free of charge, he is a volunteer) but he is completely taken care. The European Commission gives some money to the national agency of every country which has to itself redistribute this money in every organization welcoming a volunteer. The reception organization thus supplies with some money for the food, with the pocket money for the exits (the amount varies according to countries) and an accommodation to the volunteer. The sending organization pays the round-trip ticket of the volunteer.

2) Role of each

The SVE allows collectivites and associations to developper partnerships in Europe, to encourage the echanges of experiences and practices. A help for the local developpement of activites non profit-making is egalement prevue.

Role of the national agency
The national agency of every country is responsible for the accreditation of oganisations for their projects. She has to make the link between the Committee Europeenne, reception organizations and of sends and the volunteers themselves. She organizes also for every volunteer training courses in the host country: an on arrival training which aims to inform the volunteers about the host country, an evaluation in middle-course which allows to exchange experiences with the other volunteers and to make a first balance sheet and a gathering before the depart of the volunteer in his country of origin to make a final balance sheet.
The national agency intervenes also in case of conflict between the volunteer and the body of reception

At the conclusion of the SVE, a meeting of evaluation is organized in the country of sending. The volunteer receives a certificate "Youthpass" which describes and confirms the experience(experiment) of not formal learning. An activity of follow-up, the duration of which cannot overtake one month, can be realized in 6 months which follow the end of the activity SVE abroad.

Role of the volunteer
The role of the volunteer is first to be enthusiast, to participate and to help the reception organization in the realisation of its projects, to bring its experience, to share its culture and of to be open-minded to discover a new culture.
